The Origins of the Hora
To be a wedding photographer is to be a witness to various customs and traditions. The Jewish faith is so rich in tradition, I could spend an entire month writing about nothing else in my posts. My favorite thing about photographing Jewish weddings has got to be the hora however. No celebration would be complete without a klezmer band’s rousing melody enticing joyous participation in this dance.
The hora is mentioned in the Bible for the first time, in the book of Exodus. It is said that Miriam took a tambourine in her hand and started dancing with the women of Israel on the shore of the Red Sea. Since then, it has become a means of celebrating everything from military victories to of course, weddings.
