Victim of Hurricane Sandy + How to Properly Store Negatives
We recently got a call from the mother of one of our former clients. She was near tears as she explained that her daughter’s album was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. As is often the case, a couple’s wedding album becomes a treasured family heirloom and to see it in this soggy condition is quite distressing. I reassured her that because we had stored the negatives safely over the years, remaking the album would be no problem. We’ll keep you updated on its progress.
If you are in possession of photo negatives, either from your wedding or from when your mom or dad would document your family vacations with the trusty old Kodak Instamatic, here are some tips for keeping them safe:
1) Keep your negatives in the sleeves they came in. Photo labs use acid free sleeves that won’t discolor or cause damage over the years.
2) Store in a cool dry place. Do not keep them in a basement or attic.
If the temperature is comfortable for you then it’s good for your negatives.
3) Lay them flat in a sturdy acid free cardboard box, you don’t want them getting crimped.
Follow these simple steps, and your children and their children will be able to have prints made from your negatives.
